This simply isn't true. It is true that the house always wins, but it is possible for individual players to come out ahead. You can play for a long time and get lucky enough that you might come out ahead.
What that means though, is that someone else is typically way down instead. Either way, the house is making money still. The chances of coming out ahead in the long run are not great at all, but it isn't impossible.

I agree that the system was poorly designed in the beginning thinking of Halloween in particular where the only way to get a certain item was to buy chests from the gem store which didn't even guarantee a skin.
